Kathy Jackson: Ditching Fear Via Twitter

Ditching Fear Via Twitter

First I want to thank my Twitter friend @recr

You see, I am a bit of an introvert.  With my close friends and family, I am very outgoing and funny (their words not mine!).  But when I am in a room full of people or am meeting someone for the first time, I am very quiet aHiding Turtlend shy.  I have always had trouble in large groups of people and have never been able to overcome this particular issue.  Twitter and Facebook has helped me overcome this shyness.

I have had a couple of interesting experiences the last month.  The first happened at the RE/MAX convention in Vegas and the second was back home in Henderson, KY.

In Vegas, I knew one of the presentations was being given by Brad Hanks (@brandhanks) and I was looking forward to meeting him.  This was great for me, since I was the only one at the convention from my office.  All alone with a few thousand strangers, and I was comforted by the fact that I "knew" one person.  All because of Twitter!

After I returned to Henderson, I was planning to attend a presentation on Facebook and its uses for business, but was dragging my feet because of the "social" aspect.  I went, and am so thankful that I kicked my butt into going!  I knew one person from Twitter who was going to be there.  Even though I had never met this person, I felt more comfortable going to a room of strangers because of this one virtual friend.  When I walked in, he jumped up and introduced me to everyone as his Twitter Friend.  I was so relieved and immediately felt relaxed.  So relaxed, I ended up helping a couple of participants set up their Twitter accounts and get started!  Now, we are planning some future ventures for social networkiJump Right Inng!

For the socially shy, Twitter is a great way to "meet" people and get to know them.  When you do finally meet in person, you feel as if you already know the person.

If you've been hesitant about joining the Twitter craze-don't be.  Just jump right in.  Feel free to follow me at @kathy_jackson

Kathy - I can relate, because I am naturally shy and quiet, too..  :)

Roy-

Thanks for the info.  I feed my blog to Twitter which feeds to FB.  I love having that ability so I'm not constantly updating all my sights.  I just wish I knew how to feed to LinkedIn.  I followed you by the way!

Debi-

Thanks for stopping by.  Glad I'm not the only one!

That is a neat experience.  I always hate going places alone so I know how you felt.  However this turned out to be a great experience for you.  LOL

Kathy - I just started to use twitter and think it is a great way to connect with people. That's great that knowing someone from twitter made you feel comfortable in a room full of strangers.

Connie Lou- I do too, and usually can't force myself to go. It's just too scary.  I'm glad I kicked myself into going both places!!

Robert-Starting out with Twitter can be tough, but wait til you start following a few and they follow you back!!  Lots of info and networking!
